- Bugfix for BSD-ish platforms. The bug ended up being more of a re-write :-)
  It's also worth nothing that the bug had been around for aaaages and I was
  completely stumped. No-one I asked for help had been able to figure it out
  either. Copilot did. I have carefully reviewed what it wrote, and made sure
  it was thoroughly tested and human-readable.
