How do I set up MGID with ClickMagick?

Setting up MGID with ClickMagick is fairly straightforward using ClickMagick’s “Custom Postback” feature. Here’s a diagram of what a typical setup would look like:

From this diagram, you can see that traffic is sent from MGID through a ClickMagick tracking link and then on to a sales funnel. If the visitor makes a purchase and lands on the Thank You page, a conversion is recorded with ClickMagick using either a Sales Postback or a Sales tracking pixel. ClickMagick then forwards the conversion on to MGID using a Custom Postback.

In this walkthrough, we’ll cover the steps for setting up the Custom Postback from ClickMagick to MGID.

Note: If you were looking for how to set up the Postback URL from the Thank You page back to ClickMagick, that is a very different setup process that you can read about here:

How do I track conversions using Postback URLs?

To set up a Custom Postback between MGID and ClickMagick, you first need to set up MGID so that it can receive a ClickMagick Custom Postback, and then you need to set up the actual Custom Postback within ClickMagick.

First, let’s set up the MGID part. It takes just a few steps once you’ve already set up your campaign. If you haven’t already set up an MGID campaign, do that first and make that sure it works.

Now let’s add ClickMagick tracking to your campaign:

1.

Open your campaign settings by clicking on the “gear” icon to the right of your campaign in the campaign list.

Next, scroll down to the “Conversion Sensors” section. For reference, the next 3 steps are numbered in this screenshot:

2.

Make sure that “MGID CONVERSION SENSOR” is set to ON.

3.

For the “Goal Type”, select “POSTBACK”. You will be asked to set a value. Enter this:

click_id={click_id}

Click “OK”.

4.

In the box where it says “Event name”, enter something unique that relates to this campaign in some way. For example, if you’re selling golf clubs, you might use “golfclubs”. If that’s not unique enough, add some random numbers on the end such as “golfclubs82573”. Use only letters and numbers and be extra careful to not use any spaces in this name.

Write down or copy exactly what you just entered in the “Event name” field. You will need this in just a minute when you set up your Custom Postback in ClickMagick.

5.

Double-check all your settings and click the Save button.

That’s it for MGID!

Now let’s set up the Custom Postback in ClickMagick:

1.

Create a new tracking link and set the Primary URL to the offer you’d like to promote. If you need help with this step, follow the instructions here:

How do I set up a very basic tracking link?

2.

Next, create the Custom Postback using the Custom Postbacks tool in the Tools menu which you can find at the top of any page.

In the “Which Link?” drop-down, choose the tracking link that you created in Step 1. Choose Sales as the Conversion Type, and set the Postback URL to:

http://a.mgid.com/postback?c=[s1]&r=[amount]&e=youreventname

Be sure to replace
youreventname
with the “Event name” you created a moment ago in MGID. For example, if you used “golfclubs82573”, your link would look like this:

http://a.mgid.com/postback?c=[s1]&r=[amount]&e=golfclubs82573

3.

Double-check your settings and click on Add Custom Postback button.

4.

The final step is to taking your tracking link from Step 1 and inserting it into the ad you created in MGID. In other words, instead of having the ad point directly to the product or service that you’re promoting, you would point it to the tracking link you created in Step 1.

Also, so that everything works correctly, you need to pass an MGID “click ID” to the tracking link. You do that by adding
/{click_id}
to the end of tracking link. For example, suppose your tracking link for golf clubs looked like this:

http://www.clkmg.com/$username/golfclubs

You would then add
/{click_id}
to the end of it, like this:

http://www.clkmg.com/$username/golfclubs/{click_id}

When you use your tracking link in MGID, MGID will automatically replace the
{click_id}
token with a unique value that ClickMagick will send back to MGID in the Custom Postback.

With this setup, whenever anybody clicks on an MGID ad and a sale is made, the sale will be recorded in your tracking link and then ClickMagick will report the sale back to MGID.
