- add conversion modules for other Unicode encodings than UTF-8 
  (UTF-16, UCS-*)

- update documentation:
  o Perl printf() as of Perl 5.8 supports positional parameters
  o remove references to unwritten Perl-I18N-HOWTO
  o placeholder format changed from [brackets] to {braces}
  o re-sync with GNU gettext

- write self-containing example with Makefile that shows the entire
  process of message extraction, translation, maintainance and installation
